Course programme

Who is it for?
Aimed at anyone living or operating more than one hour from definitive health care, this sixteen hour course includes all of the skills and foundational knowledge of the 8 hour course and expands it further. It adds in a greater range of injuries, ailments and treatments, and helps students to develop their confidence and muscle memory through extensive use of more complex first aid scenarios. The official list of conditions is on the right, though students are encouraged to ask questions to enhance their understanding, and we try to adapt our course programme to meet the specific needs of students and their various work roles.

How is it organised?
Delivered over two full days, the programme has two phases:

1) Instruction and skills practices (15 hrs)

2) Written exam (and review) (1 hr)

Who wrote it? The course material has been prepared by highly experienced trauma surgeons and expedition doctors. It's approved by the Wilderness Medical Society, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American College of Emergency Physicians. It fulfils the first aid requirements for all Mountain Leader UK courses, the British Mountain Guides Association, British Cycling coach awards and all BCU coaching schemes.

How will I learn?
We try to keep all of our courses very hands-on, and blend as many different learning styles as possible to maximise retention of knowledge and skills. Information is imparted through a mixture of lecture, audio-visual materials, demonstration, skill practice, planning and discussion and (only occasionally!) PowerPoint slides. Our aim is to help you store the skills in your mind as well as your muscles, so we encourage as much practical, hands-on learning and repetition as possible.

We also use realistic scenarios to simulate actual first aid emergencies, and at times they may be bloody. These are not designed to stress students out, but to reinforce their skills so that they become natural and fluent.

Underlying anatomy and physiology is taught so that students are able to better understand what is happening inside the body and how it responds to the stimulus of an accident. Unlike many other first aid courses, ours also cover emotional and psychological issues - not only giving instruction on what issues you might come across, but also how to cope with the aftermath of administering first aid to someone who doesn't pull through. We'll have a look at stress and its effect on morale, decision-making and leadership.

Where is it valid, and how long for?
Because they are written by the Emergency Care & Safety Institute (ECSI), your qualifications are recognised internationally. You can also renew them at hundreds of ECSI-approved centres all around the world. It lasts for two years, but if you start to feel a bit rusty, you are welcome to attend any of our 16 hour courses again within the period at a reduced rate, just to freshen things up.

I have special needs - can I still attend?
Yes, absolutely! Evac Pack has a strong inclusion policy and aims to make all of our courses available and accessible to everyone, including those with physical limitations or learning difficulties. We only choose training facilities which have disabled access, parking and toilet facilities. We mix learning styles so that the learning is accessible as it can possibly be for all involved. Please do make us aware of your particular needs and conditions, and we'd be more than happy to adapt the course arrangements to best suit you.

What do I get out of it?

Well, there's the massive sense of achievement at achieving an internationally-recognised first aid qualification, but we hope you'll also come away from the course buzzing, as if first aid's the most exciting thing in the world! You'll meet some great new people on the course and who knows, maybe you'll be able to feed each other some work, or organise an expedition together sometime. Qualifications wise, you'll receive:

- ECSI Wilderness First Aid Certificate (2 years)
- Basic Life Support Certificate (2 years)

(Are you an outdoor centre wishing to train multiple staff? If so, please drop us a line to discuss your requirements).
