International Baccalaureate (Group1) English Language (A1) Self Taught (student's own first language
The self taught Language A1 course enables students to pursue the study of literature in their own language. Students will be guided in the techniques required to analyse literature at an advanced level, with a focus on aspects such as characterisation, theme, structure and critical approaches.

What does the course consist of?
The course is split into four sections which are taught across and eighteen month period. Students will be able to determine their own choice of texts from a list provided by the International Baccalaureate Organisation. All texts will be studied in the student's own language and some international texts will be in translation from other languages in which they were originally written. Throughout the course, students will be set a number of written assignments asking them to explore various aspects of their chosen texts. There are two oral assessments which contribute towards students' final grades, and these are conducted in the student's native tongue. There is also a piece of extended coursework and an external exam, again in the student's own language. The course is an exciting opportunity for students to engage with literature from both their own and other cultures, and has a strong international flavour. Students will be encouraged to respond independently to the texts they have chosen.

What else do I need to know?
Because students are not taught by native speakers, the tuition is based around the generic principles of literary study, and students wishing to take the self taught route will therefore benefit from having some prior experience of working with literature, although this does not need to be at an advanced level. Candidates for this programme of study will need a high level of self motivation, as much of the work is conducted during private study sessions. Students will also need to be able to hand in summarized translations of their work in English to enable their teacher to assess their progress, and their English skills will need to be sufficient for them to accomplish this.
