Who is this course for?
The course is offered in the Legal, Health and Local Government Options. It enables candidates who wish to pursue a career in interpreting within the Public Services to gain a professional qualification from the Institute of linguists. The DPSI is offered in the following languages: French, Spanish, Italian, Turkish, Farsi, Polish, Arabic, Portuguese, Russian and Mandarin. A language can be offered in whichever option, however, this depends on the number of students being accepted each year in a given language. This year, the following courses are proposed: Monday: Health Option; Tuesday: The Local Government Option; Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: Legal Option (Language and times to be decided) Please note: There must be a minimum of 4 students per option, per language. Applicants should confirm course details at interview.

What are the entry requirements?
You need proficiency in English and degree level in your mother tongue language. Previous or current work experience as an interpreter in a public service environment is desirable. The written assessment will include two sub-tasks: translation of a medical, legal or local government text from English into the mother tongue language and another text from mother tongue into English. (15 minutes per text).
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.

What will I study?
LEGAL OPTION: Introduction to English Legal System, Courts in England and Wales, Procedures at a Police Station, Interpreting for Immigration, Family Law and Civil disputes, Code of Ethics for Interpreters, Interpreting techniques: written translation, sight translation etc. Note-taking exercises, specialised terminology, glossaries, role-plays, guest speakers and trips (courts, police station, solicitors etc.

HEALTH OPTION: Introduction to the Medical System in England, The medical bodies: NHS, Private Hospitals etc., Code of Ethics for Interpreters, Interpreting and translation techniques, Note-taking exercises, Familiarisation with medical terminology, Specialised terminology, glossaries and role-plays.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT: Introduction to the concept of Local Government, The Local Government departments and their procedures: Council Services, Social Services, Housing, Planning and Economical Development, Education, Specialised terminology, glossaries and role plays.

How will I be taught?
You will be taught through team work, role plays, discussion work, translation and interpreting practice. There will be a mixture of languages in the groups but the main language of instruction is English. Every two weeks, students will have an afternoon session with tutors of their own language.

How will I be assessed?
There will be ongoing assessment throughout the course to monitor progress, with an end of year Institute of Linguists exam.

You will have access to a personal tutor to help you throughout the course. The college offers a comprehensive range of student services including learning support, language support and guidance.
