This one day Intravenous Therapy (IV) Training covers the fundamental theoretical and practical aspects of IV therapy and focuses on the preparation and administration of intravenous medications using Aseptic Technique. Theory is grounded in practice throughout the day so attendees leave feeling confident in their knowledge and are able to apply their learning to clinical practice. The day includes a practical workshop to set up a bolus infusion using best practice techniques.

By the end of the session clinicians should understand:
His/her role within the practice of intravenous therapy;
Understand the professional and legal implications of IV therapy within his/her respective clinical practice;
Understand the pharmacological aspects of IV therapy and identify its implications to clinical practice;
Identify the different complications of IV therapy and their appropriate treatments/management;

Cathryn leads on Intravenous Therapy, venepuncture & Cannulation and most recently was involved in building a course for PICCS, Ports and Central Line Access in the Community. Cathryn has a high level of clinical skills as well as key managerial, teaching, mentorship and corporate skills. Cathryn has scoped, initiated, developed and managed new services both in the NHS and private sector. Cathryn is driven to ensure the patient is at the centre of any care pathway and all services are developed ensuring high quality patient care, with their needs kept central.
Paula Lezama
Lead Trainer: Intravenous Therapy, Venepuncture & Cannulation
Paula joined VeinTrain in 2008 and has considerable experience of IV therapy, cannulation and venepuncture. As a member of the first intravenous specialist nursing team in the West Midlands she was part of a team responsible for the reduction in IV cannula and CVC line related bacteraemia infections for her NHS Trust. Paula has been a registered nurse for over 19 years and has experience in management, facilitating, training, educational roles and clinical skills roles. Paula is currently the Lead Sister for phlebotomy services, working for a busy West Midland NHS Foundation Trust.
Paulette Bassan
Lead Trainer: Intravenous Therapy, Venepuncture & Cannulation
Paulette joined Vein Train in 2013 with extensive experience in IV therapy, cannulation & venepuncture. A member of the first intravenous specialist nursing team in the West Midlands. Paulette has a Masters in Education and has been a registered nurse for over 39 years, working in a range of healthcare settings, including practice development. Paulette has considerable experience of teaching, acquired during her employment as an intravenous clinical nurse specialist. Paulette now works solely for VeinTrain and helps to support junior team members.
Sarah Phillips
Managing Director and Lead Trainer
Sarah trained as a nurse in Glasgow in 1993. A clinical background in Emergency Nursing & 7 years in Corporate Nursing at a top NHS Foundation Trust. Sarah worked for the Director of Nursing & Director of Clinical Studies (Imperial College School of Medicine) as Lead Nurse Multi-professional Practice Education. She developed the Clinical Skills Service for the Trust from 1999-2006, Sarah led a project to improve competency rates in venepuncture and cannulation and succeeded with a 98% competency rate rising from 40% previously. Sarah founded Vein Train Ltd in 2007.
