Course programme

This Foundation Course covers the principles of Chemistry related to biological systems and provides the fundamental knowledge that is essential to the study of nutrition.

Module 1 covers Inorganic Chemistry. All forms of matter are made from elements, the smallest unit of which is an atom. Time is spent understanding the structure and properties of the atom in order to appreciate how atoms combine as they do to form molecules such as proteins and to understand the basis of the chemical reactions upon which life depends. Other areas covered within the syllabus include the properties of water, alkalinity and acidity, and the principles underpinning transport into cells and cellular energy production.

Module 2 covers Organinc Chemistry, otherwise know as 'carbon chemistry, the chemistry of life'. The material within this module, whilst consolidating material from Module 1, is designed to familiarise the student with the main groups of biological molecules and their biochemical properties.

The basic principles learned within Module 1 and their biological application within Modules 2 provide the essential tools to progress onto the next level of study.

Self-assessment excercises are undertaken throughout the modules to check your understanding. Audio CDs also accompany each module providing additional support and reinforcement of key concepts.

This is a lively introduction designed to stimule your interest and make 'demystifying' chemistry a pleasurable experience.
