The course will give basic understanding of the discourse and terms regarding curating contemporary art. It will look at the role of the independent curator and how it came to be what it is today, through examples of seminal exhibitions and reading of exhibition critiques and theoretical texts. It will give the essential ideas and tools that the practice of curating involves, and take the students through the process of planning an exhibition step by step. The course will question the changes in the role of the curator in a time of multi-disciplinarily, blurring boundaries and the falling of hierarchies. A special focus will be given to curating ephemeral and time based art such as the moving image, performance and new media,and how they touch upon critical, political and social ideas in contemporary art discourse.

About this course
Young curators, artists, designers, writers, activists, or other creative practitioners who are involved or want to be involved with curatorial practice. Persons from any profession and background are encouraged to apply as often the mix of interests creates a more interesting group. However, a basic knowledge and understanding of contemporary art is mandatory.

Since the course aims to tutor the development of individual exhibition proposals, the content might change in relation to the materials brought and developed by the students.

Learning Outcomes
Students should be able to understand what the practice of curating entails, and what are the major issues and challenges that a contemporary curator tackles. They should be able to untangle some of the complexities and mysteries behind the sought after profession, and be familiar with the milestones in the contemporary history of exhibition making.
They should feel more confident regarding the various stages of curatorial practice and thoughts, and be able to put together an exhibition proposal that they can send to institutions or produce independently.At the end of the course each student will ideally have a proposal in which they received feedback from the tutor and peers, according to their needs and interests.
