This course is designed to introduce the beginner to the beautiful qualities of one of our most natural products - wood. Used by man since time began, you will only appreciate wood's beauty and quality when you have handled and worked with it.

The aim of this course is to enable the course member to recognise and salvage useable pieces of furniture and to enable you to perform small repairs, to strip to the original and to polish to a standard to suit the individual requirements. You will be introduced to a variety of woods and veneers with a range of finishes and in the first term of the course it should be possible for the course member to develop the skills necessary to carry out basic renovation of your own furniture and repair damage and blemishes that occurs through daily use.

Over a period of time, should you wish to develop your skills further, it will be possible to gain the expertise to achieve a 'piano' finish. Welcome to the course and be assured that the skills and knowledge gained will be of significant value and benefit to your everyday activities.

Additional Information

You will be expected to bring your own items of furniture for the course. Ideally these should be able to fit comfortably into your vehicle.

NB; This is not a wood working skills course. The skills that are covered are as minor repairs to furniture that are classes as part of their restoration. For course of this nature please see the list on the Skills & Crafts link on the Short Courses. http://www.myerscough.ac.uk/?page=short-course-leisure-information&subject=SSAC
