Course Overview:
The course will use the combination of both drawing skills, watercolour techniques as well as computer skills looking at both illustrator and photoshop. The course will be tailored to individual student’s styles so that they can develop and enhance their illustration techniques.
We will structure the course so that one week we will work on physical painting and drawing techniques and the alternate week we will then look at rendering the images in either photoshop or illustrator.
The course will give the students a sound introduction to illustration techniques as well as computer skills that are useful to render computer ready images ready for publishing.

Course programme
The course will be a project based course designed to develop the student’s illustrator skills.
We will look at both physical drawing and painting skills as well as computer generated techniques.
The physical skills will include:
1. Pen and ink illustration and drawing techniques. How to render light and shade using pen and ink shading.
2. Composition skills- composing a pleasing image
3. Watercolour techniques with the emphasis on hand colouring pen and ink illustration.
4. The computer skills will examine both the computer programs illustrator and photoshop. These are very large programs so we will concentrate primarily on skills specific to illustration techniques.
5. Colouring illustrations in photoshop.
6. Drawing vector images in illustrator
7. Creating digital images ready for web and print.
The project in the course will be tailored to the individual requirements and style of the student.
Assessment Methods:
Group and self evaluation by discussion, observation and regular 1:1 feedback with the tutor.
