A practical introduction to Max/MSP, a highly versatile computer program which allows you to design your own realtime audio and video processing. It’s truly creative, great fun and is particularly useful for making audio and video ‘tools’, suitable for live performance and interactive artist installation works.

About this course

- Build basic Max patches using audio and video processes with an individual touch
- Use Max’s standard user interface library to build your own interfaces
- Make the most of the extensive documentation on useful Max objects
- Use and analyse other people’s patches downloaded from the internet in order to develop them on an individual basis
- Play and manipulate sampled sound in Max
- Work with live audio inputs: interact with audio effects and live sampling
- Create simple visual effects for images and video
- Use MIDI devices and other inputs to control your audio and video processes in realtime
- Explore the use of sensors and Arduino Boards to enhance the interactive experience of your patches.

Notepad, pen, own memory stick/storage device for saving work.

Classes will generally begin with a demonstration and discussion followed by practical work.
You will work on an individual Mac workstation to practise set themes, techniques and skills, applying these to your developing ideas and material.
You will present your work in progress regularly to the group, and receive feedback, support and encouragement from your tutor throughout the course.
