Course programme
ost any human activity that involves carrying out a non-repetitive task can be a project. We all practise project management, but there is a big difference between carrying out a very simple project involving one or two people and one that involves a complex mix of people, organisations and tasks. This course is a general introduction to project management. It examines the role of the project manager, the structure of a project and the project team, the project planning process, how to set project aims and objectives, budgeting, risk analysis and how to employ a variety of useful project planning tools.
The course will include:
- What is Project Management? Overview of project management structure, terminology and principles.
- Consideration of project management techniques used in daily life.
- Project Management in the Workplace: Consideration of the use of project management in the workplace, project initiation, basic project planning and execution processes, and common tools used to evaluate progress.
- Why do Projects Fail? Investigation of why 70% of projects fail to achieve their objectives and how this can be overcome.
- Project Management in practise: Construction of a project plan, identifying appropriate milestones, an appropriate budget, and consideration of effective project review.
- Risk analysis and management: Consideration of some of the basic tools and techniques of risk assessment and management
By the end of the course it is expected that participants will:
- Understand basic project management terminology, methodology and the role of project manager
- Understand the fundamentals of Gantt charts, Critical Path Analysis & PERT
- Understand how to produce a project plan with effective budgeting
- Appreciate why projects fail and how failure can be avoided
- Appreciate the effect of Project Management on third parties
