Introduction to Community Carbon Footprinting
What is community carbon footprinting (CCF), and how is it done? This event will provide a basic understanding of what CCF is, how to get started, what support is available for communities carrying out such a project, and the variety of methodologies that exist in order to calculate a carbon footprint. It will explain the difference between carbon footprinting and eco footprinting, and give you the tools required to calculate carbon footprints whether for communities or individuals, using real case studies showing different styles of CCF and how to calculate real carbon footprints. Carrying out a CCF is an excellent way of raising environmental awareness in your community and provides a baseline from which other projects can be developed. The event is aimed at those who already have some experience of working with communities but are new to carbon footprinting.  This might include community group members, individuals and organisations who support community groups, community champions, local councillors and others who want to identify and reduce their impact on the environment.

OBJECTIVES
By the end of the event you will have:
• A basic understanding of what community carbon footprinting is and why one might be produced
• A basic understanding of the key stages involved in carrying out a survey and working out a community carbon footprint
• Looked at least two examples of community carbon footprinting projects that have already been carried out around the UK
• The confidence to put together an action plan enabling you to approach your community about working out a community carbon footprint and to initiate the process.
• Information about where help and support can be found.

THE TUTOR
Alice Goldstone has been studying and working in the environmental field for 10 years. An experienced trainer, Alice is able to make even the most challenging environmental subjects interesting and relevant to all.  Alice has experience of working with a wide range of organisations including local authorities, community groups, voluntary organisations and Primary Care Trusts. She has recently been commissioned to help the village of Talybont-on-Usk become carbon neutral.

THE VENUE
Based in the Gillespie Park Nature Reserve, the Islington Ecology Centre was purpose built to ‘environmentally friendly’ standards to provide both a visitor and an education centre.  It is easily accessible by public transport, being only a few minutes walk from Arsenal tube station, ten minutes from Drayton Park/Finsbury Park railway stations and serviced by several bus routes.  Bike racks are available and there is limited parking outside the centre.  A location map will be sent out with joining instructions.  Refreshments and a buffet lunch are provided within the course fee.

On ENVIRONMENTAL TRAINERS NETWORK

Provider description
The ETN training programme is an open programme of short courses designed mainly for people and organisations involved in the environment and aimed primarily at the voluntary sector, although roughly 30% of participants come from local authorities and government funded agencies. We run about 80-90 events a year in a range of subjects, all held in England at various locations chosen for ease of access by all means of transport – typically Birmingham, London, Leeds, York, Manchester, Bristol, Doncaster, Durham, Middlesbrough, Sheffield, Stourport-on-Severn, Sandy, Southampton, Swindon & Peterborough. The events are delivered by trainers drawn from BTCV, other organisations, and freelancers – they are all practitioners and experienced in their field. The organisations in the loose network, listed in the column on the left, contribute in various ways such as acting as a source of trainers or venues, training needs information, or helping to market the programme by circulating the publicity information through their organisations, own networks and contacts.

Course provider history
The Environmental Trainers Network (ETN) is a loose, informal network of organisations across the environmental voluntary sector. ETN itself was established in 1991 as a network of trainers and training managers in environmental organisations. Its activities are broadly overseen by a Steering Group currently drawn from Black Environment Network, BTCV and RSPB. Until about 1997 ETN received funding from the then Countryside Commission (now merged into Natural England) which it used to hold meetings and provide services for its members. Once this funding ceased, the Steering Group decided to focus its efforts on maintaining the training programme, which it first began running in 1994.
