Basic introduction
What will the course cover? (contents, themes, projects)
Learning about different groups of deaf people, appropriate terminology and the communication methods used by these groups.
Learning about different types of deafness and how these affect communication.
Becoming aware of different technical aids used by deaf people and how to use Language Service Professionals.
Developing practical communication skills to use with a variety of deaf and hard of hearing people.
Understanding the advantages and limitations of hearing aids and lipreading.
Learning to use the fingerspelling alphabet and some basic signs to communicate with a Deaf BSL user.
What can I expect to achieve?
By the end of the course you should be able to:
Demonstrate knowledge of clear communication principles.
Maintain communication and repair communication 'breakdowns' using appropriate tactics with a deaf assessor
Know how to use fingerspelling and a range of signs to communicate with a Deaf BSL user.
How will I be taught?
This training course is split into two halves as follows:
Morning (3 hours): Deaf Awareness
Affternoon (3 hours): British Sign Language
It will involve whole class teaching, pair group work, practical exercises, demonstrations, discussions, presenting information, question and answer, role-play.
