Course overview

  • Eighteen hours of lectures and participative workshops during which the background, basic theories and practical skills of PR will be explained and demonstrated using case studies and current issues


  • Defining the field and scope of public relations and its relationship with marketing, advertising, publicity and propaganda


  • Broad introductions to the specialist areas of lobbying, marketing PR, sponsorship, working in-house or in a consultancy, corporate social responsibility, relationship building, reputation management and working with different publics


  • Understanding how to write and place a news release; knowing what is news and why it needs currency and human interest


  • Beginning to understand what makes a good picture for print, the right sound for radio and when something might be of interest to television


  • Working successfully in partnership


  • Working under the CIPR (Chartered Institute of Public Relations) code of practice

    Assessment:
    A three-hour examination involving a report, a news release exercise and an essay. Those achieving a pass or above grade can apply for the CIPR Advanced Certificate course.
