About this course

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance at your last place of study or work.

No formal qualifications are required. It is desirable that you can demonstrate a general interest in the automotive industry and a positive attitude towards learning in the automotive industry.



Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.

Course programme

Year 1

The Diploma is a vocational subject-based learning programme covering all elements of basic vehicle components and systems across a broad range of automotive applications including motor vehicle maintenance, bodywork, paint refinishing and motorcycle maintenance. The programme has been designed to improve your understanding of these different vehicle systems and introduce to vehicle maintenance procedures on all major systems, including topics such as engine operating principles, braking, suspension, steering and tyre systems, transmission systems, fuel and exhaust systems, charging and electrics systems, as well as bodywork and paint. The course will have a practical focus with the emphasis on gaining the skills and understanding of tasks on motor vehicles. The aim is to give you confidence in carrying out basic procedures and so you will be given opportunities to practice skills and techniques learnt in our fully equipped motor vehicle, motorcycle and body/paint workshops.

Additional information

The course is designed to give the students hands on practical experience on carry out maintenance and repair procedures and so is delivered and assessed practically in the most part with an element of written assessments to ensure systems theory is understood. Your tutor will provide explanations, demonstrations and guide you through practical activities. Practical assessments are based on observations of practical activities, written assessments are based on completions of worksheets. On completion of the course you will earn a full IMI Entry Level 3 Diploma. You will be assessed through the use of practical and theory assessments processes that will be witnessed and signed off by our specialists.
