Course programme

The qualifications are primarily designed to engage and motivate 14-19 year olds who are interested in learning about the maintenance of motor vehicles and the various roles that are available in the retail motor industry. The qualifications' combination of mandatory and optional units provides learners with the flexibility of achieving and progressing in small manageable steps.

The qualifications have a practical approach to assessment and include many visual questioning techniques, which will stimulate and interest the learner.


You will work in a practical environment with workshop tools and equipment, building skills and techniques in the following areas of the industry:

  • Body Repair Processes
  • Routine Cooling and Lubrication System Checks
  • Routine Braking System Checks
  • Routine Wheel and Tyre Checks
  • Routine Vehicle Checks
  • Basic Vehicle Valeting
  • Light Vehicle Construction
  • Principles of Engine Components and Operation
  • Principles of Light Vehicle Steering and Suspension Systems
  • Principles of Component Fitting

You will also study to develop an understanding of motor vehicle workshop safety and the retail automotive maintenance and repair industry.

Course Assessment Method

You will be assessed through online phase tests and a practical demonstration of your individual abilities.

The following units are all mandatory:

  • Unit EL01: Introduction to motor vehicle workshop safety;
  • Unit EL02: Introduction to the retail automotive maintenance and repair industry;
  • Unit EL03: Introduction to workshop tools and equipment.
