The course consists of eight modules:

  • Module 1 – Introducing Managing Safely
  • Module 2 – Assessing risks
  • Module 3 – Controlling risks
  • Module 4 – Understanding your responsibilities
  • Module 5 – Identifying hazards
  • Module 6 – Investigating accidents and incidents
  • Module 7 – Measuring performance
  • Module 8 – Environment and client specific content (to be agreed)

On successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Outline the main provisions of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and other relevant legislation and codes of practice
  • Explain the parts and purposes of recognised health and safety management systems such as HSG65 and OHSAS 18001
  • Define ‘hazard’ and ‘risk’, and describe the legal and other requirements for risk assessment
  • Demonstrate a practical understanding of risk assessment techniques
  • Describe workplace precaution hierarchy
  • Prepare and use active monitoring checklists and implement schedules for monitoring, recording and analysing results
  • Describe statutory requirements for accident reporting (RIDDOR)
  • Identify and use incident reporting and investigation techniques
  • Describe methods of trend and epidemiological analysis for reactive monitoring data
