Computing and IT is an integral part of many industries and due to advancements within technology, there is an increasing demand for individuals with a high level of technical skills.

This IT Application Specialist Apprenticeship will provide you with the knowledge and skills to work successfully within IT systems, software applications and communication and productivity tools.

About this course


This apprenticeship is suitable for those who are currently working within this sector or are looking to gain employment within this sector as an IT Application Specialist within accounts, sales/marketing, publishing/multimedia, education/training, healthcare or general office/business admin department.

This is dependent on your employer and on the level of the apprenticeship you apply for.

You will normally need at least grade C or above in your English and maths GCSEs. If you don't have these, don't worry. You can work towards your functional skills in English and maths alongside your apprenticeship training at St Helens College.

Course programme

What type of work will I do and what qualifications will I gain?

Although apprenticeships will vary depending on your entry level and your employer. you will gain a range of skills from the varying tasks you complete. these could include:

  • Using collaborative technologies and specialist software
  • Booking appointments and booking jobs
  • Maintaining accurate records
  • Troubleshooting IT issues
  • Analysis of IT systems
  • Preparing projects for go live
  • Designing product to specifications

You will also gain the following qualifications:

  • Competence Qualification - Level 2 Diploma for IT Users
  • Employee Rights and Responsibilities
  • Level 2 Functional Skills Maths (NCFE)
  • Level 2 Functional Skills English (NCFE)
  • Level 2 Functional Skills ICT (NCFE)

You will complete functional skills if you do not have GCSEs A* - C in English, maths and ICT.

Additional information

As an apprentice. you will be assigned an assessor. who will visit you in the workplace to observe the tasks you complete. You will also complete a number of relevant work-related modules at the College. All of which will contribute to the overall success of your apprenticeship.
You will also be encouraged to undertake Microsoft Office Specialist and Expert exams along with Adobe certification as an alternative to performance evidence which will enhance your employability.
