The BTEC Level 1 Diploma for IT Users (Foundation Learning - QCFf) is designed to encourage you to develop the personal skills and qualities you need for work and to help you achieve your full potential. It is a practical hands-on programme, taught in the context of real jobs and careers in the IT sector. This gives you the chance to explore the opportunities offered in that sector, and to acquire appropriate vocational skills.

About this course




Students who pass the course usually progress to the BTEC Level 2 course in ICT. However, you can progress onto other BTEC first courses in the College if you have achieved at least an overall Merit grade.

Exceptionally, older students may progress onto a Higher Education Access course.


You should be aged over 16. There are no formal academic requirements for this course, however many students join the course with the following backgrounds:

an Entry Certificate in Skills for Working Life or Life Skills or other Entry level qualification;
an appropriate standard of literacy and numeracy;

Course programme

The course will enable you to:

All IT units are assessed through a portfolio which you build up by completing assignments throughout the year. Part of the Key Skills assessment includes online testing.
