Course programme

A chance to learn what for many people is a new language and to take it to AS level in one year. Those who already have Italian GCSE will find the AS course stimulating, offering a chance to look into exciting topics about Italy. For students who have no previous knowledge of the language, the course requires commitment but knowledge of French, Spanish or Latin makes comprehension very much easier. An extra two hours' tuition is built into the timetable for Italian Express in the first year.
The first year of the course will cover topics such as music, film, fashion designers, junk food, football, Fiat, Ferrari, the Mafia and the Internet. During the second year, topics include war, corruption, natural disasters, Catholicism, Islam, politics, immigration, Europe and international issues are studied, often through the medium of debating. In addition, students will research a film or piece of literature on which they will be examined in written form.
ENTRY RECOMMENDATIONS:
Grade B Italian if taken or equivalent foreign qualification, previous knowledge of the language, or if you have not previously studied Italian a grade A or A* in another language.
ASSESSMENT:
AS exam - unit 1 oral, unit 2 listening, reading and writing,
A2 exam - unit 3 debate, unit 4 research, understanding and written response.
PROGRESSION:
As long as there is sufficient demand students will be able to study up to the full A level in Italian. Typical careers opportunities include journalism, the tourist industry, publishing, public relations, retailing, exporting, advertising, teaching, translation and interpreting.
