Gail Walkingshaw
Tutor
Gail Walkingshaw is the Principal of the Edinburgh Therapy Academy and has a thriving complimentary therapy business in her home clinic. Once Gail finished her BSc(Hons) Dietetics from Queen Margaret’s College Edinburgh she started her therapy career with Judith Craig, the Founder of the School in 1999 as one of the very first students, studying Reflexology. Over the years she went on to gain qualifications in Holistic Massage, Aromatherapy, Indian Head Massage, Thermo-Auricular Therapy, Remedial and Sports Massage and finally a Diploma in Teaching Complimentary therapies.
Course programme
Students wishing to achieve a Diploma in any therapy form must also study Anatomy & Physiology, unless they already have an existing ITEC qualification in this subject OR are awarded accreditation for prior learning by ITEC
There are two options for studying Anatomy & Physiology with the Edinburgh Therapy Academy.
Option 1: FULL TUITION
Provision of course text and study pack with detailed syllabus for each body system. Plus attendance at 7 study days and revision sessions (which include sample exam questions) and examination.
Full fees are applicable for this option. We suggest that option 1 is best suited to students with minimal prior learning of systems of the body, and who feel they would benefit from clear and direct guidance and support to work through the specified syllabus.
Option 2: PART TUITION
Provision of course text and study pack with detailed syllabus for each of the body system. Students are required to undertake home study using course text and study pack. Attendance at 2 revision sessions (which include sample exam questions), and examination, but no attendance at training days. A reduction in fees is applicable for this option. We suggest that OPTION 2 may be suitable for highly motivated students who work well independently with limited support, and also those who have some prior learning of systems of the body.
The ITEC Diploma Course
Study methods vary using both text and practical techniques to help facilitate the practical learner. Quiz’s and games along with diagrammatic material are used and of course Anatomy & Physiology wouldn’t be complete without Mr Bones
The Diploma can be studied alone without a therapy form as the course delivery is independent of therapy tuition. Students can select either of the above Option 1- Full Tuition or Option 2 – Part Tuition. The Diploma level of study as designated by the Qualifications Curriculum Authority is LEVEL 3 which makes this course a popular choice among students from other establishments who are studying other therapies such as Bowen Technique, Thai Massage and Kinesiology.
Assessment
There is a 1hour theory exam which is 50 multiple choice questions for Anatomy & Physiology with an ITEC appointed external examiner.
Course Duration
Six full days of contact time from 9am – 5.30pm on the Saturday with a final day of Exam which may be on a Saturday but this will be confirmed in the first two months of the course starting. (50 Hours recommended guided learning hours)
