Overview
This course offers an overview, in all its diversity, of Jewish Messianism – one of the cardinal doctrines of Judaism, which has had a profound influence on non-Jewish thought.
The five three-hour sessions are devoted to:
The definition of Messianism
Messianism as a historical-political process
Mystical Messianism
Neutralizations of Messianism within Judaism
The impact of the Messianic Idea on non-Jewish worldviews.
Though history will not be ignored, the approach will be primarily thematic, and stress will be placed on the close reading of key texts in translation, a dossier of which will be provided.
This course can be studied as part of the PGCert in Jewish Studies.
