Course programme

  • Our Certificate of Higher Education in Journalism has met the tough accreditation standard of the NCTJ since it was established in 2008 and is regularly praised for its integrated, newsroom based approach to journalism training.
  • Our course is led by experienced journalists with backgrounds in the BBC, national and regional newspapers, magazines and online and includes guest lectures on specialist topics ranging from sports journalism to magazine features.
  • The NCTJ’s head of accreditation John Cary said: “Real world journalism is at the heart of the course”.
  • Two days of work placement each week embedded into the course.
  • Regular use of the state-of-the-art broadcast and online facilities in the Centre for the Creative Industries – also home to BBC Wales.

Throughout the course you will spend two days each week on placement and two days at university. Your practical experience will integrate with your two days in university studying for the NCTJ Diploma in Journalism exams giving you a head-start in the competitive journalism jobs market.

Your placement will include reporting on crime and emergencies, interviewing local and national celebrities, and heart-warming human interest stories as well as coverage of courts and councils.

Lectures cover practical journalism, media law, journalism ethics, the workings of democracy plus shorthand of up to 100 words per minute all leading to the NCTJ’s Diploma in Journalism.

Modules

  • Media Law and Regulation: You will be working towards your two NCTJ law exams – Essential Media Law and Media Law: Court Reporting – in this module. Your legal studies will be integrated with a detailed examination of the essential ethical and regulatory issues in journalism including the Ofcom broadcasting code and the Editors Code of Practice for print journalists.
  • Journalism in Society: This module leads to the NCTJ exam in Essential Public Affairs and will give you an insight into the working of modern society both locally and nationally. It will include visits to councils at all levels, working on local and national government stories and an insight into the life of an MP.
  • Practical Journalism: Practical reporting experience in your newsroom placement will form the bulk of your work in this module with a range of stories all pulled together in your NCTJ e-portfolio. You will also develop your digital news writing skills as you work towards the NCTJ Reporting exam.
  • Advanced Specialist and Technical Skills: Versatility is essential for aspiring journalists so we will widen your skills by looking at a range of specialist journalism options including sport, broadcasting and design. Shorthand is still essential for working journalists and in this module you will also work towards the NCTJ gold standard of 100 words-per-minute in the Teeline system.
