INTRODUCTION
Key Skills help you to improve your learning and performance in education, training and work. They can also contribute to your points score for entry to Higher Education. All students at Gateway College follow a Key Skills programme along with tutorial work and their main programme of study.

What are the Key Skills?
Gateway College offers the following Key Skills:
Communication.
Application of Number.
Information Technology.
Improving Own Learning and Performance.
Working with Others (College Citizenship programme).
Problem Solving.

A Key Skill is negotiated each year at an appropriate level (1,2 or 3). We also offer our students a Skills for Life programme which may be undertaken in place of a Key Skills programme. This will be negotiated at Induction â€" during the first week or so of the new academic year.

How will I study my Key Skill?
If you are studying in a Vocational area your Key Skill will already be fixed as a part of your programme. All the work you undertake will be integrated with your vocational units;

OR

If you are studying for AS/A2 qualifications you will have two hours per week of Key Skills, taught in a discrete group;

OR

You will be placed on Skills for Life programmes alongside your main programme.

Assessment
Assessment is by completion of a portfolio of work and a test (from which some students may be exempt).

Choosing a Key Skill
You will choose an appropriate Key Skill with your Induction tutor at the beginning of the year. Your choice will complement your main programme and depend on what you have already achieved.
