Laboratory and Science Technician Intermediate Apprenticeship
Learners will train as a junior laboratory technician and learn practical scientific skills. The nature of your work will depend on your employer, but whether you work for a pharmaceutical company or a university, you’ll probably be part of a team of other scientists and technicians.

Technicians are employed in a wide range of scientific fields ; hospitals, health clinics, pharmaceutical industries, schools, colleges and Universities. Laboratory and Science Technicians cover a broad range of occupational roles from those who support scientist’s and engineers in research and development work to those who provide quality assurance or analytical science services. They can also be found in Schools, colleges and universities supporting teachers of science and technical learning.

Who is the course for?
This apprenticeship is designed for trainee Laboratory and Science Technicians who carry out laboratory testing and perform a variety of technical support functions to help Scientists and other Technicians. It will enable the individual to develop the knowledge and skills needed in this area of work. It is also suitable for Technicians in an educational role, for example, at a school or college.
How will I learn?
Laboratory and Science Technician Intermediate Apprenticeship
Learners will train as a junior laboratory technician and learn practical scientific skills. The nature of your work will depend on your employer, but whether you work for a pharmaceutical company or a university, you’ll probably be part of a team of other scientists and technicians.
You might help collect and analyse samples; prepare cultures or specimens; set up experiments; and record and present data. You might also be responsible for ordering and controlling laboratory stock and supplies, and making sure laboratory equipment is clean and in good working order.
During your Apprenticeship you’ll learn about the fundamentals of science, pick up practical skills and take a qualification in applied science.
How will I be assessed
Continuous assessment in your workplace and day release at college. Assessment includes BTEC assignments throughout the course. Your functional skills are assessed through a written examination.
What award will I achieve?
- NVQ Diploma in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities Level 2
- BTEC L2 Extended Certificate in Applied science
- Functional Skills Level 1 in English, Maths and ICT
What next?
Progression to L3 Laboratory and Science Technician Advanced Apprenticeship.
What are the Entry Requirements
5 x GCSEs grade D-E including Maths, English and Science.
Attendance
You will attend College one day a week.

if you do not already have one.
