Course programme
MA in Landscape Archaeology
Mode: part-time
This programme is one of the leading postgraduate degrees in its field and is ideally located close to many sites of archaeological importance and interest.
Particular emphasis is placed on the acquisition of interpretive and field skills through field trips. While fieldwork will be concentrated upon the surrounding area of Bristol (from the uplands of Exmoor and the Brecon Beacons, to the chalk downlands of Wiltshire and the wetlands of the Severn Estuary), the outlook will be international with material drawn from worldwide environments.
One of the chief strengths of this programme is that in addition to teaching from within the Department, you are also taught by a wide range of experts and specialist landscape archaeologists from other universities, archaeological units and government bodies.
The strength of the programme's intellectual and practical training is reflected in the very high levels of success of past students who have obtained archaeological posts in professional archaeology or have continued with PhD research in archaeology at Bristol or elsewhere.
Programme Structure
You must obtain 180 credit points, of which 120 are from five mandatory taught units, 20 from a three-month placement and 40 from a dissertation. All units are assessed by means of coursework comprising essays, fieldwork projects, seminar presentations and a dissertation of about 10,000 words. There are no examinations.
First Semester
- Unit 1: Materialities
- Unit 2: Methods and Theories in Landscape Archaeology
Second Semester
- Unit 3: Prehistoric Landscapes
- Unit 4: Medieval and Post-Medieval Landscapes
- Unit 5: Heritage Management in the Landscape
Three-Month Placement
