If you enjoy working in all weathers and want to learn about plants and landscape construction then this is the course for you. You will learn the science behind plants, use machinery, be set problems to solve, build and construct patios, paths and learn how to maintain lawns. You will also learn plant identification weekly, which is a very employable skill to have. There is also the chance to take part in a number of projects including building show gardens and working with local enterprises.

What you need to know
How will I study?

The course is split with 70% practical and 30% theory based. It will be taught in outside practicals and well-equipped classrooms. The following units will be delivered during your course: understanding the basic principles of soil science; understand the basic principles of plant science; manage plant propagation activities; undertake work related experience in land-based industries; establish and maintain plants outdoors; construct garden walls; construct landscape foundations and surfaces; contribute to establishing and maintaining amenity turf; introduction to plant selection. If you are a full time student aged 16-18 you will follow a study programme which will consist of your main course, enterprise and enrichment activities, English and maths as well as work experience.
How will I be taught?

You will be taught in many different ways. In the classroom, teaching will include interactive white boards, internet videos, photography, video and seminars. There will also be discussions, debates, questions and competitions. On practical activities, demonstrations will be given to help you understand and develop your skills and knowledge. Your input is essential to the course and all of your views will be listened to and respected.
How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed in many ways, including set practical and written assignments. Grades are set at Pass, Merit or Distinction on all units. There are no exams for the main qualification and all your assignments and practical's will create your portfolio as evidence for your final grade.
