This new Language Acquisition and Development MSc course is the first master’s programme in Wales to offer courses in typical and atypical language development in both monolingual and bilingual (simultaneous and sequential) populations. It consists of a taught component including a combination of core and optional modules, and a research dissertation of 20,000 words.

About this course


Students will be able to critically present and discuss at an advanced level key facts, concepts, ideas and approaches relating to the study of bilingualism and language acquisition.

Students will be able to analyse and critically evaluate at an advanced level competing theories and theoretical controversies in the study of bilingualism and language acquisition.

The course aims to enable understudies to: Students will be able to compare and critically evaluate at an advanced level the relative and complementary merits of various kinds of competing methodologies, and select an appropriate methodology for investigating specific phenomena.

Students will be able to design and present at an advanced level a research investigation in this area of study.


Successful completion of the programme will provide you with the requisite skills, understanding, and knowledge to work effectively and increase your employability in organisations working with bilingual populations and second language learners with and without language impairment, such as speech and language therapists and teachers.


A 2.ii undergraduate degree in linguistics or a related area normally required. Applicants who do not speak English as their native language must pass the IELTS English test with a score of 6.0 in all four components. Students who have an overall score of 5.5 on the IELTS can take a summer pre sessional course in the University’s English Language Centre for Overseas Students (ELCOS).

Course programme

Compulsory Modules: Language Acquisition: The main objective of this module is to introduce you to central questions in language acquisition research (e.g. How do we learn the meaning of words? What are the advantages of bringing up a child bilingually? Are children better language learners than adults?). The focus will be on first language (L1) acquisition. Research Methods in Linguistics: This module aims at equipping you with the necessary foundations and tools to design and carry out experimental research within linguistics, as well as preparing for your dissertation. Optional Modules vary from year to year, and include: L2 Speech Learning Current Issues in Bilingualism Second Language Acquisition Language Pathology Psycholinguistics Models of Sentence Processing Phonology in Bilingual Acquisition Language Contact and Bilinguals
