About the subject

The subject has a literary focus at advanced level, and the language study serves the end of making it easier to read and understand the literary texts. Prose and poetry texts are available from a range of literary genres, and the historical or cultural contexts of these are also discussed in the course. Students who have particularly enjoyed the subject at GCSE will find that AS and A2 Latin explore a wider range of Latin and in greater depth, and that through the discipline of translation their grasp of English is also enhanced.

Learning Styles
As set sizes are very small, and the subject is taught on a slightly reduced timetable, learning in lessons is fairly intensive. It may involve translating at sight, or going through a prepared translation, studying grammar, sentence structure and idiom or discussing stylistic features of a given passage. Written work is carefully debriefed in class.

Subject combinations and progression
Latin can fit well with any other subject, though Modern Languages and English are particularly clear examples. Students go on to Higher Education in a variety of subjects, including (recently) Mathematics and Veterinary Science.
