Law AS and A2



INTRODUCTION
The A level Law course provides a good introduction to the study of law. It combines well with virtually all other A level subjects.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?
The course follows the AQA syllabus. It aims to:
Develop an understanding of legal method and reasoning
Develop the techniques of logical thinking and the skills necessary to analyse and solve problems by applying legal rules
Develop the ability to communicate legal arguments and conclusions with reference to appropriate legal authority
Develop a critical awareness of the changing nature of law in society

AS CONTENT
This is a one year course. You will study 3 major aspects of English Law.
Module 1 LAW MAKING and THE LEGAL SYSTEM
How law is made by Parliament and by the judges â€" Looking at the courts and the people who work in them, how legal action is financed.

Module 2 THE CONCEPT OF LIABILITY
The principles which form the basis of liability in both criminal and civil law also looking at various sentences and remedies people are likely to receive.

AS ASSESSMENT
Module 1 is assessed by a 1½hr exam in June and Module 2 by a 1½hr exam in January.

A2 CONTENT
Students who have taken the AS course can complete a second year to achieve the full A level. In this course you will specialise in criminal law and tort explaining rules of law to answer problem questions. The areas covered are:

Module 3 Fatal and Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person

Module 4 Offences against the property : Theft, Burglary and Robbery ALSO Concepts of law looking at the relationship between Law and Morality.

A2 ASSESSMENT
The course is assessed by two examination papers, one for each module.

MODULE 6 - 2 HOURS

HOW WILL I STUDY?
The course is taught using a variety of teaching and learning styles. You will have thorough preparation in the skills required to write essays and solve legal problems. Practical experience is gained by visits to the local courts. The library is well stocked with the necessary books for the course. All students have access to the internet which provides a number of web sites which will help you in your research.

As well as the 5 hours spent in class you will be expected to use a similar amount of time each week for private study.
