What can this course offer me?
A living subject which affects all areas of your life. Law provides the framework for protecting life and liberty across the world as well as regulating everyday contacts between people.
There will be the opportunity to participate in mock trials, court visits and Law conferences with outside speakers from the legal profession.

What will I learn?
At AS level you will study how laws are made, how to become a lawyer or be on a jury, as well as looking at crimes such as actual and grievous bodily harm, and what sentences to give. At A2 the focus will be on crime with murder and manslaughter, on tort with topics such as negligence and nuisance. In addition, you will study concepts such as justice and morality.

What Makes a good Law student?
Good communication skills both oral and written. Being able to take in facts and apply them to problem situations and the ability to argue points.

Which other courses link well with this subject?
Law develops skills of writing, reading, analysis and argument and can be linked with subjects which develop similar skills, such as English, History, Politics, Psychology and Sociology. However Law goes well with subjects like science, drama and maths.

Future Opportunities
Over a third of A2 law students progress to take a Law degree at University. Although it is not necessary to take Law at A Level to enter a Law degree neither is it a disadvantage. The following comment comes from the Department of Law, Durham University website: "We welcome applications from students studying A Level Law!"

Past students have found it a great advantage to have taken A Level Law prior to a Law degree as it helped them decide Law was for them and it gave them the key basic knowledge that non-A Level Law students will not have.

A few students go straight into legal employment after A Level law, in the police or in a solicitors firm. Successfully completing A Level Law will give you exemption from the Introduction to Law unit on the ILEX Professional Diploma in Law for those wishing to gain employment as a legal executive.

Is there anything else I need to know?
We try to enrich your knowledge and understanding of the English Legal System by activities such as mock trials and court visits mentioned earlier. In addition in the second year we offer an enrichment course called the Legal Studies Certificate, which is a City & Guilds qualification taken by people working in the legal world.
