To study the Access to A Level programme you will need grade C in THREE of the following (inc. short GCSEs) : English Language or Literature/Humanities (History,Geography,RS,Sociology,Psychology)/Business/Science (Core and Additional OR triple)/Maths ... and mainly grade D in other subjects OR be pre-16 home/Steiner educated (subject to screening)

This course is for anyone who wishes to gain an understanding of the role of law in today's society. The Course will concentrate on elements of criminal and civil law.
What does the course involve?
Law is fluid and continually developing; influenced and changed by everyday events. This is an exciting and stimulating course covering the operation of the English legal system. Learn about the principles of law-making as well as the basics of criminal and civil liability.
In addition to gaining legal subject knowledge, students will develop skills of selection, analysis, critical thinking and decision making, and an awareness of the rights and responsibilities of individuals.
Students are expected to read a quality newspaper and to keep abreast of current affairs; these elements are an integral part of the course and discussions about topical issues take place during lessons.
What will I study?
The course consists of 2 units.
Unit 1: The English Legal System. In this unit you will learn about the following topics - 1)Introduction to Law; Meaning and definition of law; Classifications of law. 2)Courts and Processes; Hierarchy of the Courts; The Criminal Courts; The Civil Courts; 3)People in the Law; Lay People; Legal Professionals;Solicitors and Barristers 4) Sources of English Law; The making and importance of Acts of Parliament.
Unit 2: The Law In Action. 1) The Law of Tort; Negligence; Trespass; Nuisance; 2) Criminal Law; Fatal Offences; Non-fatal Offences; Property Offences.

Does the course offer any educational visits?
Each year we try to run a visit to Bristol Crown Court. Here students will get to watch real court cases and get a feel of how the law works in reality.
