What does it cover?
The course will cover communication styles and different ways to manage people effectively. There will be an introduction to management theories and tools for problem solving. Each person will have the chance to answer the Mouton and Blake questionnaire about leadership styles and analyse this within the group.

How long is the course?
It is recommended this course is undertaken over a one or two day period. However, a half day introductory course is available covering the basic modules.

About this course

This course is aimed either at those staff who wish to apply for promotions or advanced training or at those already in a leadership role but who have not had specific training.

All courses are held on your own premises for your convenience. If you prefer offsite training, we can book a training venue in either Burton upon Trent or Derby. There will be an additional cost for hiring the venue.

We are based in Burton but cover the West Midlands area. We can also travel to other areas such as London so please get in touch to discuss whether a course in your workplace is viable.

Lyn has been working within education for over twelve years. Her main teaching experience has been functional skills English and maths and GCSE English. Lyn co-ordinated college wide English and maths for a number of years and alongside this role delivered a number of development sessions for staff on topics such as embedding equality and diversity, differentiation and e-learning. Lyn has also worked with a number of high-profile companies, including Toyota, Coors, Argos and Waterstones, to provide English and maths programmes to their employees. Additionally, Lyn has authored exam papers.

Course programme

This leadership and management course is an introduction to the topic that will allow participants time to discuss their leadership and management positions or aspirations to identify what the focus points of the course should be. Throughout the course there will be a mixture of presentation, whole group discussion, small group and pair work and individual work.

Some of the elements of the course include:

Introduction to communication styles - How do people communication effectively? What should a good manager be aware of in terms of communication?
How to manage people effectively - What makes a good leader? What makes a bad leader?
Introduction to management theories - What are the most popular theories? What do they involve?
Analysis of tools for problem solving - What tools are available? When should each be used? How can they help?
Mouton and Blake questionnaire - Each person to fill in the questionnaire to discover more about their leadership style. General analysis and comparison.
Personal leadership styles - What styles are popular? What style suits each participant?
Introduction to SWOT analysis - What is SWOT analysis? How is it carried out? When it is carried out? Why do so many people get it wrong?
Leadership practical tips -Some general tips for leading effectively.

Each person will have the chance to ask the tutor questions throughout and learn from the experience of others in the room. Each participant will receive a workpack to keep with information for the course and additional information for further study.

The course will help participants to identify the areas they need to work on in order to be successful in a managment or leadership role. The course is only short so the main aim will be on the participants being introduced to the basics of leadership and management. They may decide they want to complete a formal qualification to fully develop their skills and this will be a good starting point to help them make their decision on further study.

We can cater for students with learning disabiltiies such as dyslexia, ADHD or autism as we are educatio specialists.

Our courses involve a mixture of activities to suit all learning styles and to make the learning more interesting and accessible. In this way we hope to provide maximum value for money for each participant.
