This course explains the challenges and issues concerning effective project leadership and how to best meet these challenges. It evaluates various leadership theories and will help project leaders assess their own personal styles; describes motivational approaches and barriers to team performance and the stages of team development. In this course you will learn how to best resolve conflicts and manage agreement, and how to enhance communications effectiveness.

About this course

You will develop the necessary skills to get the maximum performance from every member of the team, know how to apply the methods of leadership that are most appropriate for achieving project success and discover which forms of leadership and communication are best suited to the various stakeholders. You will learn techniques for resolving conflict and managing team issues, and gain a solid understanding in analyzing stages of team development and maximizing project team effectiveness.

Professionals working in development and humanitarian assistance projects. Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and project managers who want to increase their leadership skills.

There are no requirements to take this course, although the students will benefit if they know the type of work that occurs in development organizations and development projects, or had some experience working on a project. Students should have a good internet connection, Adobe Reader in their computers as well as MS Office to work on the course assignments. Good connectivity is required to watch some of the online videos. As a convenience to our remote students you can download most of the course material to read offline. A copy of the textbook will be available in pdf format.

This online course promotes and facilitates the collaborative learning approach in online courses. Students will participate in discussions as part of the assignments and receive feedback from the course instructor. The instructor provides materials, lectures, tests, and assignments that can be accessed at any time. Students "learn by doing" through the class exercises while lecture points are reinforced with class discussions and videos and "hands-on" integrated exercises, which lead students through the project management processes.

Our Instructor-lead online courses come in two types. Core courses last 3 weeks, elective courses take two weeks. This includes the time to read the attachments, take the tests and complete the course exercises. For self-guided courses, students have access to the course site for three months, during that time they can take the course, review all lessons and submit the final essay.

Yes, all students that complete all course requirements will receive a printed and signed Certificate of Completion at no extra cost. Shipping is airmail with the U.S. Postal Office. Shipping for international addresses takes about 15 days.

No. All our online courses do not require students and instructors to be online at the same time. All lectures, discussions, and presentations do not occur at a specific hour, and students do not need to be online at the same time in order to participate.

Yes, all students have an additional 30 days to access the course material; additionally, you can download all the presentations, documents and examples provided by the instructor.

The discussion forum is a foundational item in the online learning structure. Students participate in discussions facilitated by the instructor. A series of questions are posted in the forums that all students must respond and comment. It's a great way to respond to questions and to share documents and links. It's also a good place to ask questions and to clear up ambiguities.

We understand that sometimes things don't go as planned, if you cannot complete the course for whatever reasons, you can move your registration to the next session at no extra cost.
