Course programme

This is a great introduction into the leather accessories making process and will help you develop essential sewing skills. To start, you will learn how to identify different types of sewing machines both industrial and domestic and have an understanding of what each type of machine is used for. You will understand the threading sequence and bobbin winding methods for each machine . You will then progress to learning a range of stitch techniques. By the end of the five days you will have made a pack of stitch samples and be confident in using a range of sewing machines. You will also create a fabric bag to keep all your samples in.

The course is in two parts and includes the following:

Part 1:

  • Threading of a cylinder arm machine, a post machine and a flatbed machine
  • Know the difference, benefits and limitations of all of the above
  • Look at and use different feet and their uses
  • Understand thread types and needle sizes
  • Be able to trouble shoot and correct common machine faults
  • Understand machine maintenance and ways to avoid major faults occurring

Part 2:

  • Learn a range of seam types and edge finishes for all styles of bag
  • A range of decorative stitch techniques including Zig Zag and binding and piping
  • How to stitch a ‘T’ Base bag

Level:

Beginners. You should have an interest in the subject area and a desire to learn but no previous experience is required.
