The scope of the leisure industry include: sport, play, formal and informal use of leisure time, sport providers, participants, spectators, health and fitness, home-based leisure, leisure shopping, the business infrastructure, countryside activities, popular entertainment facilities, lifelong learning, heritage and museums, team and individual sport activities. This list is illustrative, to indicate the broad range of activities and settings that are regarded as appropriate areas for exploration in this subject area.
This course aims to encourage candidates to develop broad skills, knowledge and understanding of the leisure industry. We aim to prepare you for further study, or training in the leisure industry. Prospective students should be outgoing independent individuals with a desire to discover the business and employment opportunities that lie within this diverse industry
Learning Styles
Students undertaking this course will undertake discussions, role plays and carry out research using a variety of sources. Presenting their research in a variety of ways. In the long term Leisure studies students will develop the ability to work independently and will acquire excellent study skills.
Subject combinations and progression
The qualification allows for a number of progression routes:
o Higher education: the Advanced awards provide a sound basis for progression to a range of HE courses, e.g. Sports Studies or Leisure Management;
o Employment: the course aims to maintain and support the recognised standards demanded for leisure industry education and training in order to meet the requirements of various leisure industry sectors. With a GCE in Leisure Studies, a candidate would be a suitable recruit for a supervisory role in the leisure industry.
The Sport and Leisure department have a wide range of courses to meet the demands of students interested in the sport and leisure sector. These include the AS and A2 Travel and Tourism, Customer Service, Community and Higher Sports Leaders Awards (CSLA and HSLA), AS/A Level Physical Education and the Level 1 and Level 2 YMCA Gym Instructor qualifications. Other related advanced level courses include Food & Nutrition and Health & Social care.

Portfolio assessed units are assessments carried out by the student in which he or she produces evidence of achievement in a variety of formats. These can include presentations, written reports, role plays, discussions, interviews, posters, video demonstrations or teacher observations.
External assessed units are units which are assessed through formal examinations each externally assessed unit will have a 1 ½ hour examination formed of short answer questions.
