Course programme

You will develop knowledge and confidence in dressmaking through: - Learning how to use a sewing machine - Taking personal measurements and learning how to adapt a pattern to fit - Learning how to choose suitable fabrics for fashion styles - Approaching the process of cutting out and assembling garments in a systematic way - Sampling seams, hems, buttonholes and zips for a professional finish - Compiling a file of samples and information - Learning how to use equipment in the workroom safely and with due consideration for others - Using the creative process to develop personal ideas - Making a skirt and easy fitting top - Gaining an understanding of how to use materials, tools and equipment effectively and safely You will work to achieve a Level 1 Award in Creative Craft from NCFE. The qualification is achieved by completing 70 hours of study (covered by the course hours) and producing a portfolio of work to demonstrate achievement of the course objectives. Your portfolio will be assessed by your tutor and an external assessor. The Award comprises three units: - Unit 1- You will explore the work of others to inspire and develop your own dressmaking ideas. You will record your ideas and discuss the positive aspects and the issues and challenges the idea may have generated. - Unit 2- You will develop your knowledge of materials, exploring their properties and characteristics. You will develop your skills and use of tools for working with the selected materials. You will also cover the health and safety procedures relevant to the chosen tools and materials. - Unit 3- This unit gives you the opportunity to plan, produce and reflect on your own craft work. You will use the skills and knowledge you have gained to design and produce a final piece, reflecting on the successes and challenges you encountered along the way.The course will be taught through a practical hands on approach, with theory sessions taking place only as needed.
