This is a two year level 3 programme which focuses on developing knowledge and professional skills in childcare and education to enable learners to gain employment within the field of childcare. Learners are encouraged to be independent, inquiring and capable of responding to set projects and developing self-initiated work. Over the two year study period the Diploma component offers 65 credits and the Extended Diploma offers 150 credits/UCAS points. Progression from year one to year two is subject to satisfactory progress and achievement. Integral to the programme, learners will experience a minimum 750 hours of practical training in a range of placement settings. Learners will undertake First Aid and Level 2 Food Safety in Catering training. Learners will benefit from the expertise of external guest speakers in related fields. Learners will have the opportunity to experience various educational visits. Forest School opportunities will be provided. Learners will complete Essential Skills and the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification. Opportunities will also be provided for GCSEs in English and Mathematics and for Welsh language development.

About this course

Satisfactory interview, reference and enhanced CRB check. Level two learners will need to either be employed or volunteering in a childcare setting on a professional basis for a minimum of 12 hours per week. NB Level 2 learners will need to arrange their own placement experience. For level 3, learners will need to be in a senior role within their employment.

Course programme

  • This qualification is for those who wish to work in children's care learning and development settings or services in Wales.
  • Part-time day or evening provision
  • 2 hour workshops across the academic year together with work based assessment or employment.
  • The opportunity to undertake and achieve a certificate in First Aid and Food Hygiene.

The Diploma provides a qualification both for those already employed in a childcare setting and those wishing to gain employment in the field of childcare in a variety of settings including a diverse range of job roles and occupational areas in statutory, private and voluntary settings.

Additional information

All units are internally assessed in accordance with Skills for Care and Development Assessment Principles and the QCF Regulatory Arrangements for the qualifications and credit framework. Assessment enables the learners workplace practice to provide evidence for individual units as well as the whole qualification. Methods of assessment could include direct observation, professional discussion, reflection of practice along with learners own written records. The qualification will be pass or refer and all assessment criteria must be achieved to obtain a pass grade. Learners will be supported and assessed by a nominated college assessor.
