This qualification is designed for people who have a specific responsibility at work, or in voluntary and community activities, to provide first aid to children including babies when dealing with: an emergency situation, chronic or sudden paediatric illness or injury. The level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (QCF) can be used towards other qualifications at the same and higher level, plus aid career progression in a relevant profession.

About this course
This QA qualification is for people who work with or look after children, enabling them to have a basic knowledge of how to deal with paediatric first aid situations, illnesses, injuries and emergencies.
Although the course outline has a large theoretical content, the delivery is 50% scenario based.

Emergency Paediatric first aid
1. Understand the role and responsibilities of the paediatric first aider
2. Be able to assess an emergency situation safely
3. Be able to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and breathing normally
4. Be able to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally
5. Be able to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is choking
6. Be able to provide first aid to an infant and a child with external bleeding
7. Be able to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is suffering from shock
8. Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child with bites, stings and minor injuries
Unit 2
Managing Paediatric Illness and injuries
1. Be able to administer first aid to an infant and a child with a suspected fracture
2. Be able to administer first aid to an infant and a child with head, neck or back injury
3. Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child with conditions affecting the eyes, ears and nose
4. Understand how to administer emergency first aid to an infant and a child with an acute medical condition or sudden illness
5. Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child who is experiencing the effects of extreme heat and cold
6. Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child who has sustained an electric shock
7. Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child with burns or scalds
8. Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child who has been poisoned
9. Understand how to provide first aid to an infant or child with anaphylaxis
Assessment
The assessment consists of 2 multiple choice question papers and 6 practical assessments. The trainers will continually assess throughout the course but the learner will specifically be required to demonstrate the following for child and infants.
Infant CPR and safe use of an AED
Child CPR and safe use of an AED
Choking casualty
Paediatric wounds, bleeding and shock, plus optional extra – Catastrophic bleeding
Unconscious casualty
Management of paediatric fractures
