The objectives of the award are for candidates to gain an understanding of: the risks and hazards that can exist within the working environment. the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. UK legislation and regulations. European legislation. Suitable for: Adult learners who are seeking re-entry to the employment market, but who have insufficient qualifications and/or experience. Learners who wish to access training within the health and safety sector, with a view to progression to further and/or higher programmes of study. Learners currently studying on other vocational programmes who wish to undertake the award as an additional learning aim.

There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements for this award. Access to this award is open to all candidates; however, a basic level of numeracy and literacy is required to use the materials and complete the assessment tasks.
NCFE recommends candidates wishing to undertake this award should hold an appropriate Level 1 qualification or equivalent.

Introduction

The Level 2 Certificate in Health and Safety at Work is a joint development between NCFE and Tribal (Network Publishing), specialist publishers of high quality distance learning materials.

The Level 2 Certificate in Health and Safety at Work is an ideal award for learners who wish to develop knowledge of health and safety issues in the workplace and the legislation and regulations relating to maintaining a healthy and safe working environment.

NQF level equivalence: 2

Assessment requirements: Internally assessed portfolio

The award consists of 4 mandatory units:

  • Unit 01 Introduction to the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
  • Unit 02 Hazards, risks and risk assessments
  • Unit 03 Electricity, hazardous substances (COSHH) and fire safety
  • Unit 04 Work equipment (PUWER), personal protective equipment (PPE) and first aid

Aims and Objectives

The award aims to:

  • Enable candidates to improve their current knowledge of health and safety
  • Introduce candidates to the various health and safety UK and European Acts and legislation
  • Enable progression to other vocational courses and enhance career prospects

Progression Opportunities

Successful candidates interested in taking their learning further are able to progress to one or more qualifications within the National Qualifications Framework. There is a wide range of industry specific NVQs and other vocational qualifications that include aspects of health and safety. For example, learners could progress on to NVQs in Care, Distributive Operations, Distributive and Warehousing, Retails Operations, Cleaning, Food Preparation, Food and Beverage Service and Sport and Recreation.

Assessment

Each candidate is required to create a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates achievement of all learning outcomes associated with each unit.
The main pieces of evidence for the portfolio are:

  • end of unit assessments

all of which are appropriate to the award and to the needs of candidates.
Assessment guidance is provided by Tribal (Network Publishing) for each unit.
Assessors must be satisfied that candidates have achieved all learning outcomes related to the unit being assessed prior to deciding whether candidates have been successful. Assessors are also responsible for supporting candidates through the assessment process.

Achieving the Level 2 Certificate in Health and Safety at Work

To achieve the Level 2 Certificate in Health and Safety at Work candidates must demonstrate their achievement of all learning outcomes of each unit detailed in the Award Specification. Grades are not awarded.

Candidates who are unsuccessful may resubmit work within the registration period. A charge may apply. Letters of Unit Credit may be requested for candidates not achieving the full certificate but who satisfy the internal assessment component for at least one whole unit.
