Royal Horticultural Society qualifications are aimed primarily at vocational candidates intent on acquiring the necessary skills and knowledge to pursue a career in horticulture. In addition, this RHS Level 2 Certificate is ideal for dedicated amateurs who wish to have their horticultural knowledge and skills formally assessed. The course is based at the National Botanic Garden of Wales. Candidates achieving 50% or more in the written exam will be awarded credits for that unit. Candidates achieving 70% or more in the written exam will be awarded with commendation in that unit. Candidates achieving commendation in all four mandatory units will be awarded the qualification with commendation.

About this course

Applicants should have some work experience in the industry or be experienced gardeners. There are no academic entry qualifications for this course.

Course programme

The course is based at the National Botanic Garden of Wales, which has excellent practical facilities and offers students the opportunity to work alongside experienced horticulturalists and botanists Students have access to the Library at the National Botanic Garden, which has a large stock of horticultural learning materials Students have free internet access for research at Coleg Sir Gar, Pibwrlwyd Campus.

Learners may progress to the RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Plant Growth, Propagation and Development or the RHS Level 2 Certificate in Practical Horticulture.

Progression to RHS Level 3 qualifications is also an option.

Additional information

Each unit will be assessed by a separate written examination, set and marked by the RHS. Examinations are offered twice a year in February and June.

Learners who have successfully completed all the mandatory units for the two theory-based Level 2 qualifications will be awarded the RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Horticulture.

Learners who have successfully completed all the mandatory units for the two theory-based Level 2 qualifications and the Level 2 Practical Certificate will be awarded the RHS Level 2 Diploma in the Principles and Practices of Horticulture.
