Community Sports Leadership Award

What Will I Learn On This Course?

The primary aim of the B.S.T. Community Sports Leadership award is to increase the number and quality of voluntary sports leaders who are capable of assisting with the organisation and running of sporting and recreational activities for 'community' groups.

A logbook will be kept and completed by each candidate signed by the Course Director. Each course is externally moderated. A pin badge and certificate is awarded to each successful candidate.

Course Content And Method Of Assessment

Unit 1 - Contribute to organising and delivering a sports activity session
This unit forms the core of CSLA. It is through development of skills acquired in this unit that all other units of the Award can be applied. The emphasis throughout the whole course, and in particular this unit, is on each candidate learning in a practical way the fundamental skills of leadership. They will be learning:
-How to organise groups of people / Communication skills / How to structure a session / Discipline

Unit 2 - Establish and maintain a safe sporting activity
The learning outcomes of this unit include checking and taking action to ensure that equipment, facilities and participants are ready for safe activity. This unit also includes:
-How to complete risk assessments / The completion of an HSE 1st Aid award (minimum of 4 hours)

Unit 3 - Understand the structure of sport and recreation at local, regional and national level
Candidates will demonstrate knowledge of local, regional and national provision for sport and recognise the role that they could play in the delivery of sport in their community.

Unit 4 - Understand and lead fitness sessions
Candidates will understand the basic principles of fitness and how to test different fitness components. They will plan and lead sessions designed to improve participant's fitness levels.

Unit 5 - Demonstrate principles and practice in running sporting events and competitions
To understand the structure of a variety of competition formats including:
- Leagues / Knockout competitions / Round Robins
Assessment of this unit will involve students planning and leading a sports event that will involve acting as an official during the competition.

Unit 6 - Demonstrate principles and practice in adapting sports activities
This includes: · Potted sports and skill activities / NGB Mini games and initiatives /Improvising with equipment / Role of referee, umpire, official / Developing a repertoire of activities.
Candidates will deliver improvised sessions with limitations on equipment, space and participants

Unit 7 - Plan a series of appropriate sporting activities
Each student will demonstrate planning for a series of sessions, with clear progression from one session to the next.

Unit 8 - Demonstrate leadership skills in the community
Each student will be expected to complete at least 10 voluntary hours in the community helping with an activity of their choice. This is usually arranged by the student with an existing contact however the college may be able to help with placements in local primary/junior schools.

After The Course

The CSLA is a very valuable qualification for anyone interested in leading groups in sporting and recreational activity.

It is hoped that each candidate will use his / her qualification in the community, and lead in sporting or recreational situations.

Subject Combinations

It combines well with Physical Education or Sport but is available to any student who is interested.
