Course programme

The National School of Blacksmithing was originally founded in 1946 and is recognised as the foremost national centre for training blacksmiths who wish to work in the various areas of forged iron, ranging from traditional to contemporary design work. Students are also expected to organise work experience with a blacksmith as part of their study programme which will give them an important insight into the metalwork industry.
High achieving blacksmiths trained at HLC are very highly regarded by employers and many subsequently trade in their own right. This subject is an excellent choice for a self-motivated and hard-working person who will be expected to have good hand/ eye coordination and artistic ability, someone who would like to form their own business or someone who has enjoyed woodwork, metalwork, drawing and other related subjects at school.
This is a challenging introductory course for developing blacksmithing skills. The course seeks to lay the foundation for a successful career in forged metalwork. It comprehensively teaches the technical skills that are essential to become a competent blacksmith after progressing to and successfully completing the Level 3 Diploma in Blacksmithing.
