Crane technicians carry a great deal of responsibility for health and safety; this is one of the few jobs on productions that involves real life risks for all cast and crew. Crane operators must have excellent technical and operational knowledge of a variety of cranes (there are at least twenty different cranes used on feature films in the UK).

About this course

These qualifications are awarded by University of the Arts London and delivered/assessed by Creative Skillset Craft & Technical Skills Academy at Amersham & Wycombe College. Upon acceptance to the qualification, you will be interviewed and then allocated a qualified assessor who will carry out three work based assessments. You will also be required to write up log-books and provide photographic evidence. The qualification can take between 3-24 months.

You may progress to becoming a crane technician.


This Qualification is made up of 6 sections, called units. Each unit describes what you must be able to demonstrate and can competently do on production. Being competent means that you can do a task to a skilful level, understand why it is done that way and usually are able to solve problems associated with the role.

Units include:
- Contribute to good working relationships
- Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
- Lay basic flat track
- Rig remote heads and systems
- Track the camera
- Rig camera cranes

It is a requirement that you already have two years industry experience as a crane technician before you can apply.
