Course programme

There will be a large emphasis on students gaining practical skills and developing their own abilities using personal planning and reviewing techniques. Units will include: Outdoor and adventurous activities Lead an outdoor activity session Expedition experience Promote outdoor activities Plan, deliver and evaluate an activity session It gives you a very practical experience where you will learn and develop skills to help you gain employment as an outdoor activity leader or climbing instructor. You will develop communication and teamwork skills as well as increasing your confidence and improving your character. These are very important when looking for a job. The course is delivered at Keighley College with students expected to be out 1 day a week on activities. You will explore the Yorkshire Dales including Ilkley Moor, How Stean Gorge and Strans Gill. A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade D including English and/or ideally Maths or equivalent (e.g. Level 1 functional skills), BTEC Level 1 or satisfactory completion of a Foundation Learning Programme at Level 1. Advice on careers and further study will be given throughout the course. After successful completion of the course, students may seek employment, an apprenticeship or apply for a BTEC Level 3 in Sport or Public Services.
