Course review:
The 'End of Life Care' Strategy (EOLC) was published by the Department of Health in July 2008. This course is designed to address that strategy, with the core principles based around the person centred approach and the Care of the Dying Pathway. It explores the physiological, psychological, social and spiritual aspects of care during the end of life journey.
Learners will gain an in-depth understanding of best practice, effective communication strategies, the concept of spiritual care as well as knowledge of the tools and assessments used for this type of care.
- Understand and recognize the needs of a client
- Give appropriate care to the client, regarding hygiene, eating and drinking
-Ensure the physical comfort with regard to positioning, skin care and sleep
- Identify the effects of medication
- Understand when pain relief is not effective and the correct action to take
- Recognise when support is needed emotionally
- Know when to contact relatives, give appropriate information and support
- Care for the client, relatives and the care team after death.
