About this course

NVQ Level 2 in Instructing Exercise & Fitness (PSF0003)

What are the Course Details?
The course is aimed at people wanting to enhance their knowledge and experience in exercise and fitness. Throughout the year learners will lead groups for differing sports and fitness sessions at beginner and intermediate level.

You will learn new leadership skills, how to plan, organise and deliver differing sessions to groups with various ability. You will learn basic first aid skills and how to deal with differing first aid and emergency scenarios, human anatomy and how different body systems work. You will also learn how to induct clients to the gym and use all the gym machines safely and correctly, as well as fitness testing a client and writing out different fitness programmes for clients with differing needs.

You will gain valuable knowledge and experience by delivering fitness and coaching sessions throughout the course.

What will I Learn?
Learners will undertake five core units:
  • Deal with accidents and emergencies
  • Evaluate and develop own practice in instructing exercise and fitness
  • Motivate and support clients to develop and maintain their fitness
  • Plan and prepare gym based activities with clients
  • Instruct, observe and assist gym-based activities

How will I Learn?
You will learn by completing a work placement at Kingsway Fitness Suite and delivering fitness and coaching sessions to different groups at the College. Theory and practical lesson are delivered at the College and West Common Sports Hall.

How will I be Assessed?
All learners are assessed practically for each unit and must also complete a range of underpinning knowledge criteria which may be in the form of questions, tasks and short assignments and projects.

What Enrichments are Available?
All learners have access to a full enrichment programme.

Sport Enrichment, Sports Teams and Running are the more favourable for learners on this type of programme. All learners have the opportunity to complete a pool lifeguard course and Community Sports Leaders Award.

Are there any Trips or Visits?
A trip to PGL (Outdoor Pursuits Centre) which involves climbing, abseiling, kayaking, raft building and high ropes etc.

Previous years have also seen sports tours abroad playing against teams from other countries.

Other activities include, paint balling, theme parks, visits to sports grounds and much more ....

Is there any Work Experience?
Work experience will take place at Kingsway Fitness Suite, a minimum of 30 hours to be completed by each learner. Learners will undertake the role of a Recreation Assistant and complete a range of different duties.


What can I Progress to?
At the end of the course learners can either progress to NVQ 3 in Coaching, Teaching and Instructing or gain employment in the sports/fitness industry.
