Course programme

English Level 2 Adult Literacy Certificate
If you achieved a GCSE grade lower than D, you should consider taking the Level 2 Adult Literacy Certificate instead of the GCSE course. It concentrates on your ability to understand written information and places less emphasis on producing formal written work. It provides a qualification equivalent to GCSE English for students who intend to study subjects that do not require formal essay-writing skills. This course is also available to adult learners, either individually or through employers.

What will I study on this course?
The Certificate concentrates on your reading and understanding skills, as well as some features of writing such as spelling, punctuation and grammar. It:
  • emphasises your ability to understand written information;
  • places less emphasis than GCSE on producing formal written work;
  • is a qualification equivalent to GCSE English for students who intend to continue in subjects which are not essay based

How is this course assessed?
A one-hour on-line test, consisting of 40 multiple-choice questions. Most
questions are based on real examples such as a letter or a table of information.
You choose the correct answer from four possible ones.

What kind of student will do well on this course?
This course is designed to give recognition to those students whose reading ability is greater than their writing skills.

Educational Experience
Due to the small number of students this course is usually delivered in a very supportive almost individual manner. Readiness to take the examination is carefully assessed by the teacher and could take place as early as the first term.

What do students say about it?

It made me think I wouldnt mind doing another one.
I quite enjoyed it, it wasnt the sort of things they forced you to do at school.
Give it a go youve got nothing to lose. Its broadened my horizons and given
me more self-confidence. I know now that Im as good as anybody and I can do
anything I want. Its for everybody.
