Course programme
Level 2 Hairdressing is a highly practical one year programme, underpinned with the theoretical knowledge required for you to work safely in the salon and understand the basics of hairdressing skills.
You will learn how to advise and consult with clients, shampoo and condition the hair and scalp, change hair colour, cut hair using basic techniques, style and finish hair, set and dress hair, salon health and safety, provide customers with a positive experience and how to promote additional services and products.
You will be supervised by technical staff and assessed on your competence. Together with your assessor, you will build a portfolio that will be a mix of theoretical evidence, exam results and practical observations. It must show achievement of all learning outcomes, assessment criteria and range as set out by the awarding body.
Undertaking work experience in a salon will be part of your learning programme. A part-time job in a salon alongside your college programme will improve your studies and progression opportunities.
All students without an A*-C grade in English or Maths will be required, as a condition of the programme, to undertake either a GCSE or Functional Skills programme. You will mainly learn through practical demonstrations, completing tasks on your head block and working in the Colleges salons. There will be a dedicated theory session to ensure you gain all the knowledge outcomes required. Tutorial sessions are designed to track your progress. You will also have the opportunity to take part in trips to trade shows and short industry-based courses.
Assessments are through observations, witness statements, audio-visual media, written questions, oral questions, assignments and case studies. Attendance in the College per week is 16 hours for your vocational programme. It is expected that you will complete some of the theoretical evidence required at home.
On completion of Level 2, you will be interviewed and trade tested to check suitability of progression to Level 3. Your attendance and behaviour will also be a deciding factor towards your progression options.
