This in-depth awareness course is designed for both care and nursing staff who are new to the field of palliative care or require a refresher on the subject. It enables learners to identify and understand the key principles of palliative care – an active holistic care approach to patients with advanced progressive illness. The course explores what palliative care is and how to deliver this care, ensuring dignity, comfort and empathy are always addressed. Learners will discuss the life death cycle, pain management, skin and mouth care, communication skills and the effects of death on the carers.

Palliative care is the active holistic care of patients with advanced progressive illness. Management of pain
and other symptoms and provision of psychological, social and spiritual support is paramount. This indepth
awareness course is designed for both care and nursing staff who are new to the field of palliative
