Course programme

This programme is ideally suited for individuals with a genuine interest in sport and active leisure, but who also have the ability and determination to succeed. We ask that applicants are ideally actively involved with a sports team or health and fitness club as this will enhance their research. There is an expectation for all sport students to take part in college sports teams and enrichment activities, before lessons and on Wednesday afternoons, throughout the year. This programme provides students with an opportunity to gain an insight into the wide and diverse nature of this growing sector. The programme retains an academic base, whilst including practical units and modules. You will need to be confident, self- motivated and a good communicator as this will stand you in good stead for your research work as well as your work placement. You will complete projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands and learn about the employment area you have chosen, growing the skills you need to start a career. You will develop both knowledge and understanding of the sports and active leisure industry as well as develop important practical and organisational skills to support your progression. The programme is made up of a variety of practical and theoretical units from the wide nature of this growing sector. Each unit is worth a number of credits which will make up your final grade. The following are a sample of the unit (these may vary each year): -Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise -Participating in Sport -Introduction to Healthy Exercise and Nutrition -Psychology for Sports Performance -Physical Fitness and Injuries -Work Experience in the Sports Industry -Lifestyle and the Sports Performer -Exercise Health and Lifestyle -Introduction to Sports Massage -Outdoor and Adventurous With our help, all students are expected to organise a relevant work placement each year. In addition to this, you are expected to help voluntarily at college enrichment and sporting events around the College and with the local primary schools. All students without an A*-C grade in English or Maths will be required, as a condition of the programme, to undertake either a GCSE or Functional Skills programme.Throughout the year assessment for both practical and theory units is undertaken using a variety of methods and styles. Each assignment will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction level and contributes to the unit and overall programme grades. Each of the units will have three to five assignments. These assignments may be reports, presentations, practical assessments or research projects. Attendance in the College is an average of 16 hours per week of contact time. In addition to this, it is expected for students to complete a further 8-12 hours of independent study, both in college and at home.
